Luna. Tirage pigmentaire réparé à l'or 24 carats

I’m a finalist for the Estee Lauder Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Award.

When I met Luna through social networks, so young and so strong, after breast cancer at just 26 and multiple ordeals, I saw how she had become a role model for all fighters. When we met in ‘real life’ for a moment of sharing and our photo shoot, an alchemy took place. Like that which occurs when gold powder is deposited on lacquer…

Fine art photography : artist’s statement

Laetitia Lesaffre works on repair, memory and the trces of that memory. As a visual artist, she works with traditional Asian lacquer, a material that serves as a support for reflection, a founding principle of her photographs. She captures these traces by photographing her models reflected in her lacquer. These lacquered panels serve as mirrors, they erase the line and show the sketch.

In her work, the notion of time is important. Time is sometimes suspended, like an image conjured up from a dream, the place and time of which cannot be recalled. The long time it takes to work with lacquer encourages meditation, while the spontaneity of the shot encourages immediate action. She seeks to capture that moment when the subject escapes its image, and thus reveals another interpretation of the body, of the portrait, of the very essence of the subject.

Over time, her photographic work has taken on a sociological dimension. Her portrait series “DE-SOL-ES, childhood in exile”, created during a residency at France Terre d’Asile, her series “Kintsugi, women reflection” and her new project “Kintsugi, children’s souls” anchor her work in contemporary reality.

She takes part in numerous exhibitions in France and abroad, notably in Milan (MIA), Brussels (AAF), Cologne (List), Paris (Fotofever, Galerie Hegoa), Lille (Galerie Melting Art) and New York (Sturgis Art Gallery). Her work can be found in private and public collections. She also took part in a group show at the Maison de la Photographie in Lille, and has received awards (Objectif FEMMES 2018 winner, Conseil Général de l’Essonne prize, Beaune special jury prize).

As an insatiable researcher, she continues to experiment traditional lacquer, the art of Kintsugi, old-fashioned prints and mordanting, and through reflections, dissolves the boundary that separates painting from photography.
